5 Foods That Were Invented in America by Accident

Some of America’s most recognizable foods have surprisingly strange origin stories. A kitchen mistake, an experiment that went differently than expected, or a simple case of making do with what was available can sometimes result in something that eventually becomes a staple. The next time you’re browsing the menu at one of the many Winchester restaurants, consider how many familiar foods have a backstory that sounds more like an accident than a recipe.

Potato Chips

One of the most famous food origin stories involves a frustrated chef and a demanding customer. According to the popular story, chef George Crum was working at a restaurant in Saratoga Springs, New York, in 1853 when a customer repeatedly complained that his fried potatoes were too thick.

Crum eventually sliced the potatoes extremely thin, fried them until crisp, and seasoned them. Whether the story happened exactly that way is debated by historians, but Saratoga-style potato chips were being sold by the 19th century.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

The chocolate chip cookie was reportedly created when Ruth Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts, added chopped Nestlé chocolate to cookie dough in the 1930s. She expected the chocolate to melt into the dough, but it retained its shape instead. The result became one of America’s most famous cookies.

Popsicles

The Popsicle reportedly began when 11-year-old Frank Epperson accidentally left a mixture of soda powder, water, and a stirring stick outside overnight in 1905. Temperatures dropped, freezing the mixture around the stick. Years later, Epperson patented the frozen treat, originally calling it the Epsicle before the name Popsicle eventually caught on.

Corn Flakes

Breakfast cereal has an accidental history, too. In the late 19th century, brothers Will and John Kellogg were experimenting with grains while working at a sanitarium in Michigan. A batch of cooked wheat was reportedly left sitting longer than intended, and when it was rolled, it produced flakes. The brothers continued experimenting, eventually developing corn flakes.

The Ice Cream Sundae

Even the ice cream sundae has a disputed origin story. Several American cities claim to have invented it in the late 19th century. One popular explanation suggests that ice cream topped with syrup became known as a “Sunday” special before the spelling eventually changed. The exact story remains debated, but the dessert became an American classic.

There’s Always More Food History to Discover

Food has a funny way of turning mistakes into traditions. From an unexpected cookie to a frozen accident, some of the foods we take for granted have stories that are anything but ordinary. The next time you’re exploring food at Swanton Street Diner, you may find yourself wondering what other familiar favorites have a story hiding behind them.
