Coffee. Facts, Quotes, and a Little Humor.

With mornings comes coffee. Well, for most anyway.  As one of the best Winchester restaurants for breakfast, our family at Swanton Street Diner knows coffee. And, good coffee at that. Whether you like it black or steamed with your choice of milk, we understand the importance of a good cup of joe. That said, we thought we would take this moment to look at some of the best quotes and fun facts centered around coffee.

So grab a cup of your favorite coffee variation, sit back, and enjoy!

The facts.

With anything comes facts. Coffee is no exception to this statement. Below, we’ve gathered 10 of the most quirky facts you may (or may not) know about coffee.

The first webcam was created to watch…a coffee pot.

Long before video calls and streaming, researchers at the University of Cambridge grew tired of walking to an empty coffee pot. In 1991, they set up a camera so everyone in the building could check whether fresh coffee was available before making the trip. A few years later, the camera became one of the first devices to share live images on the World Wide Web, making the “Trojan Room Coffee Pot” a piece of internet history.

You can soak in a coffee bath in Japan.

Several Japanese hot springs and spas offer coffee-infused baths, where brewed coffee is added to the water. While it’s not a traditional practice throughout Japan, these specialty spa experiences have become a popular attraction for visitors looking to relax with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee.

Brazil is the world’s largest coffee producer.

Brazil has held the title of the world’s largest coffee producer for more than 150 years and typically supplies about one-third of the world’s coffee. Thanks to its ideal climate and vast coffee-growing regions, Brazil remains the global leader in coffee production.

Hawaii is the only U.S. state that grows coffee commercially.

Hawaii’s tropical climate makes it the only U.S. state with a large, commercial coffee industry. The famous Kona coffee is grown on the slopes of the Big Island’s volcanoes. (While coffee can be grown in Puerto Rico and a few U.S. territories, Hawaii is the only U.S. state with commercial production.)

England’s first coffee house opened in 1652.

The first coffee house in England opened in Oxford in 1650, followed by London’s first coffee house in 1652. These cafés quickly became gathering places for conversation, business, politics, and news—earning the nickname “penny universities” because a cup of coffee bought access to lively discussions.

Americans drink a lot of coffee.

The United States consumes more coffee than any other country in total volume, thanks to its large population. While countries such as Finland drink more coffee per person, about two-thirds of American adults enjoy coffee every day, making it one of the nation’s favorite beverages.

The average coffee drinker enjoys about three cups a day.

According to the National Coffee Association, the average American coffee drinker consumes about three cups of coffee each day. Whether it’s a quick cup before work or an afternoon pick-me-up, coffee has become a daily ritual for millions of people.

More than 2.25 billion cups of coffee are enjoyed every day.

Coffee isn’t just America’s favorite morning beverage—it’s a global phenomenon. More than 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed worldwide every single day, making it one of the most popular drinks on the planet.

Does light roast have more caffeine than dark roast?

Sort of—but not by much. Light roast beans are denser than dark roast beans, so if you’re measuring coffee by the scoop, light roast may contain slightly more caffeine. If you’re measuring by weight, however, the difference in caffeine is minimal. Either way, don’t expect a dramatic boost from choosing one roast over the other.

Espresso began in Italy in the late 1800s.

Espresso traces its roots to Italy, where inventor Angelo Moriondo patented the first espresso machine in 1884. Later improvements by Luigi Bezzera and Desiderio Pavoni helped create the espresso machines that transformed coffee culture around the world.

The quotes.

Now that you have a little insight into the world of coffee, we’d like to share some famous quotes! Sure, millions are floating about, but here are a few to lighten your day.

  • “People say money can’t buy happiness. They lie. Money buys coffee. Coffee makes me happy.” -Unknown
  • “Coffee makes us severe, and grave, and philosophical.” – Jonathan Swift, 1722
  • “Everyone should believe in something. I believe I will have another coffee” – Unknown
  • “The most dangerous drinking game is seeing how long I can go without coffee.” – Unknown
  • “I never drink coffee at lunch. I find it keeps me awake for the afternoon.” – Ronald Reagan
  • “Caffeine and sugar, the two basic food groups.” – Laurell K. Hamilton
